Happy Thanksgiving from the Sierra and enjoy a favorite family recipe

We're back up in the moutains for a few days with a tiny dusting of snow. After a good night's sleep, our backs (very sore from unpacking) have improved. Cooking Thanksgiving dinner on a tiny scale for us is underway.

I've never purchased a store-bought pie before, nor cooked so little Sacrament (sweet potato dish) in all the years I've had the recipe.

This recipe has been given out to friends around the world -- and is quite a "leg-up" on older "throw some marshmallows on top of canned yams" fare. I actually got the recipe on a knitting group way back in the days of "Prodigy" online -- sometime in the late 1980s -- and we've been making it ever since.

Sacrament (sweet Potato Casserole)

* 2 ½ cup cooked, mashed yams
* 1 cup sugar
* ¾ stick butter
* 2 eggs
* 1 cup evaporated milk
* ½ teaspoon nutmeg
* ½ teaspoon vanilla
* ½ teaspoon cinnamon
*
* Topping:
*
* 1 cup crushed Cracklin Oat Bran
* ¾ stick melted butter
* ½ cup brown sugar
* ½ cup chopped pecans

For potatoes: Beat all ingredients in mixer. Pour into baking dish and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. (May be frozen.) Topping: Mix all ingredients and spread on top of yams. Bake another 15 minutes or until almost firm. Serve warm.

PS this is a veggie side dish!
